According to what emerged following an article published in the New York Times, Facebook would be discussing with some exchanges a potential announcement for the launch of its own cryptocurrency. A move that could soon be made also by Signal and Telegram, thus enriching the cryptocurrency market with alternatives.

Citing "some people informed about the negotiations", the Times reports that Facebook told the exchange that it expects to get its own asset in the first half of 2019. The Facebook project, which had previously been reported by Bloomberg as a stable coin for its WhatsApp messaging service, would be the most famous and important of the cryptocurrency group, considering that the social media giant can already boast 2,5 billions of global users.

A source who spoke with CoinDesk on condition of anonymity confirmed that the company is working on a stable coin, based on meetings with Menlo Park.

It is also known that Facebook has strengthened its blockchain team in recent months, with the recruitment of at least one particularly talented and competent staff. The company is currently looking to fill nearly 20 blockchain-related positions, and already more than 50 Facebook engineers have dedicated themselves to the corporate blockchain project.
