On December 13, Emmy-nominated photographer John Knopf announced that he had sold his Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT.
The statement wouldn't have been noteworthy if he didn't get 347 ETH for the non-fungible token. Knopf said he originally purchased laser-eyed monkey astronaut number 9452 the day it was minted for just 0,08 ETH.
The sale brought him about $ 1,39 million in profit at current ETH prices (quotation in real time). In response to the sale, an excited Knopf said, “I'm speechless right now. I am crying so much. Thank you, BoredApeYC, for completely changing my life and everyone in the community !!! "
Some respondents pointed out that if it had been based in the United States, there would have been a large tax bill to deal with where the government could have taken up to 35%.
Million dollar mistake
The buyer, Chain Protocol CEO Deepak Thapliyal, summarized the purchase, stating that he "decided to 'ape' and buy mine, but being my first NFT I wanted to buy the right one".
He moved 655 ETH into his wallet in preparation for purchasing the Astro-monkey at the full asking price. Suspicions have been raised regarding the transaction, as 230 ETH was mistakenly sent to the seller in addition to the offer price.
“After making my original offer, I had to move 230 ETH to another wallet on my mobile. I _thought_ that the copy button of the address I was sending to was pressed correctly ”.
He then tried to contact Knopf to explain the mistake and agree on a price for the NFT.
“I explained my story and told him how I wanted his monkey. He immediately informed me that he did not intend to keep my money and that he would send it back to me ”.
Knopf returned the 230 ETH (about $ 920.000) after the two agreed on a price of 347 ETH for the piece.
Mistakes are not uncommon in the world of NFT sales. In late August, an NFT mutant monkey was sold for USDC 17 instead of ETH 17.
